7th Annual Cayucos Sea Glass Festival

Do you ever wonder what people are looking for while walking Cayucos beach? You might notice they walk slowly with their eyes focused on the ground and stoop often to pick something up. They are looking for sea glass! Sea glass is glass that at some point has been dumped in the ocean and tumbled for several years. It usually has a frosted appearance and if looked at closely through a microscope, you can see C-shaped indentations in the glass.

Eight years ago a group of sea glass collectors (the Sea Glass Sistahs) came up with the idea of having a sea glass festival in Cayucos. When 3,000 people attended the first festival, it became evident that sea glass was something more than just a hobby. This year the 7th annual Cayucos Sea Glass Festival had almost 5,500 attendees over the two-day event. People come from across the country to admire and purchase jewelry and handcrafted items made of sea glass.

Kicking off this year’s festival was the first ever Mermaid Ball, where guests were invited to dress in ocean themed costumes. Jason from Cabana Jewelry created a one-of-a-kind bejeweled sea glass tiara for the best-dressed mermaid. People enjoyed dancing to live music from Burning James and the Funky Flames and a clam chowder cook-off between local restaurants.

There was concern of how this year’s festival would pan out with the condemnation of the Cayucos Veterans Hall. As a result of the closure, an oceanfront tent pavilion housed the entire venue. Attendees and vendors loved the open concept, which allowed for a better shopping experience.

Visitors had the opportunity to take photos with live local mermaids in the Mermaid Lounge.

Live music entertained the crowds on Saturday and Sunday.
